Spotlight on Leola & Simmie Fairley

Leola retired from the school system as the Head Secretary of Alton Elementary in 1996 after 30 years of service.  Simmie retired in 2002 after 43 1/2 years of service.

He served as a high school math teacher, Assistant Principal of Salmen High, and as a Supervisor of Administration.  As a supervisor he was in charge of furniture placement in the schools, meeting with principals of newly built schools to discuss their wants and needs, locating land within the parish to build new schools, and the school uniform programs.  After retiring he was called back for 2 years as a mentor to newly appointed administrators.

The married couple of 56 years have been living a fulfilling life after retirement by travelling extensively, performing daily relaxing activities that they enjoy, and by maintaining a good healthy lifestyle.  Simmie is also currently serving as a board member on the Mandeville Planning and Zoning Commission, President of the STSP Federal Credit Union, and President of the Executive Board at the Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in Mandeville.

A typical day for Leola is to get up by 5:15a.m. and do her home chores.  By 6:15 she is off to Franco’s Athletic Club for her daily exercise routines, and then on to do her daily shopping.  By 10:30 she is back home to relax, relax, and relax!  Simmie greets each day with exercise, working in his yard, and keeping in touch with the people he serves as either a board member or volunteer.  He loves his fishing excursions, as well as, golfing with friends and shooting pool.
When asked if there was a talent they wished they had, both said, “a great singing voice”.

I asked them which dish did they enjoy cooking and they replied gumbo for Leola and red beans for Simmie.  After discussing the ways they prepared the dishes I now want to join them one day to sample both!!
