Spotlight On Ida Thomas James

After Ida’s official retirement in 2002 as a 3rd Grade Language Arts teacher at Lyon Elementary, she became a LATAAP External Evaluator and later a LEAP Intervention Tutor. In 2009 she re-retired! Today Ida finds herself very busy with volunteering and holding various offices with her church, sorority, and community. We congratulate Ida on receiving the “2016 Zeta of the Year” award just last month.

She has held the office of Recording/Financial Secretary for the Bethel Reform Methodist Church, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority’s Theta Zeta Chapter, STRSEA, LRTA’s District III, and Grambling University National Alumni Association’s Martha Adams Chapter. Ida is a member of the Greater Covington Branch of the NAACP where she is Committee Chair for the “Dr. Martin L. King Poster and Essay Contest” judging each year and volunteers with both the St. Tammany Parish Community Ambassadors and the Boys and Girls Club of Covington.

A typical day in the life for Ida actually begins the night before when she checks her calendar. She makes a list of things to do and places to go so that she is “running in a circle” that begins and ends at home. She has a friend who calls to ask, “Can I get in your circle today?” Her day may include taking someone (or herself) to a doctor’s appointment, running errands in and out of town, meetings, volunteering at various events or charitable agency, etc. She shops only when absolutely necessary!

How do you like to spend a Saturday morning? Watching children shows, cartoons, and old westerns. What are your most treasured possessions? My photos, black angels collection, and salt & pepper shakers collection.

When asked about the best concert she ever attended her reply was the Essence Festival with Luther Vandross.  Ida’s favorite karaoke song would have to be “My Girl” by the Temptations!
